Centrum Management & the American Hungarian Folklore Centrum presents
MASTERS OF HUNGARIAN FOLK MUSIC

HUNGARIAN FOLK MUSIC ENSEMBLE
From Marosvásárhely, Transylvania (Erdély)
The ÜSZTÜRÜ Ensemble plays the authentic village music of Transylvania and Hungary in an exciting performance. Members of the Ensemble have studied extensively with the greatest masters of Hungarian folk music and carry on a tradition, which will assure the survival of traditional Hungarian music into this new century. The ÜSZTÜRÜ has performed in many countries of Europe. The North American Tour during the Summer of 2000 will introduce this exciting group of musicians to this continent.
The ÜSZTÜRÜ Ensemble was founded in 1992 by young Hungarian musicians while attending university in Kolozsvár. They were born in Transylvania and had close connections to the communities where Hungarian folk music was still a living tradition. They witnessed first hand how authentic, traditional folk music, played on acoustic instruments, has disappeared from village life, having been displaced by electronic instruments and Western pop music. The members of the ÜSZTÜRÜ were fortunate to learn and play with the greatest masters of Transylvanian music: Sándor Fodor [Neti] and Ferenc Árus from Kalotaszeg; Kodoba Béla and his family from Magyarpalatka, István Ádám [Icsán] from Szék; István Jámbor [Domnezu] and Ferenc Mezei [Csángálo] from Szászcsávás. Some of them, alas, have passed away. Many years of playing with these folk artists and studying, collecting their music makes the members of the ÜSZTÜRÜ special bearers of Transylvanian Hungarian music. They are dedicated to assuring the continued survival of a folk art form, which can rarely be found even in its indigenous surroundings. The Ensemble is also at home in performing all Hungarian folk musical dialects from the Austrian border to the Eastern slopes of the Carpathian Mountains.
The ÜSZTÜRÜ is excited about their first North American visit. They wish to share with American audiences their enthusiasm for authentic Hungarian music and convey its deepest thoughts, exciting emotions and versatile moods as they have learned these from their masters. Featuring:

About the band

ÜSZTÜRÜ was founded in May 1992 in Kolozsvár by Levente Major (violin), Csongor Könczei (viola) – both from Kolozsvár itself – and József Szász (viola) and Lörinc Szász (double bass) – brothers from Korond (in Western Székelyföld). Initially, the group explored the basics of folk music while playing for the ‘Bogáncs’ folk-dance group. (‘Bogáncs’ had been founded in 1985 at Brassai Samuel College in Kolozsvár). After high school Levente Major and Csongor Könczei went on to study at the Philological University while the Szász brothers gained their diplomas at the Technical University. (Later Csongor Könczei took up the offer to lead the ‘Bogáncs’ dancers and so left ÜSZTÜRÜ.)

At the beginning of Autumn 1992, while still students, the musicians were contracted to join the Háromszék State National Dance Group by its then leader Árpád Könczei. At Háromszék, ÜSZTÜRÜ expanded to include István Moldovan Horváth (violin – from Marosvásárhely), and Erika Demeter (singer and dancer – from Székelykeresztúr in Western Székelyföld). As accompanists for Háromszék, ÜSZTÜRÜ laid the foundation of their image and popularity in Transylvania with such tunes as ‘My Father’s Dance’ and with ‘The Bride, a Pretty Flower’. As well as working with those dance groups, ÜSZTÜRÜ frequently played in folk-dance houses, folk-dance camps and performed in many other countries in Europe.

Notwithstanding the decline in the numbers of folklore musicians and dancers by the end of the twentieth century, Transylvania has retained its traditions of folk music and dance. Thus it is no surprise that this group is especially interested in music played on string instruments from throughout Transylvania (Szék, Kalotaszeg, Mezoség, Küküllömente, Székelyföld). Striving to play folk music authentically, ÜSZTÜRÜ has developed personal ties with Transylvanian gipsy musicians. Roving the villages, the work of collecting turns into study-programs for which they have had excellent masters, like Sándor Fodor/Netti of Bács, the Kodoba family from Palatka, István Jambor (Dumnezu), and Ferenc Mezei (Csángáló) from Szászcsávás as well as the late Ádám István (Icsán) of Szék, and Ferenc Antal (Arus) of Méra both of whose works can only be known by recordings.

ÜSZTÜRÜ‘s main aim is expressed by the group as follows: As we work with this music which fascinates us, we frequently meet living embodiments of Transylvania, owing to whom our respect for local folklore has deepened. So we feel compelled to meet those people in their own environment and be enriched by their daily outlook. Our experiences have brought forth feelings, moods and thoughts which we strive to express through our music.

Az ÜSZTÜRÜ együttes 1992 májusában alakult Kolozsváron. Alapitói a kolozsvári Major Levente prímás (1973) és Könczei Csongor brácsás (1974), valamint a korondi Szász József brácsás (1970) és Szász Lörinc bogos (1968) testvérek.

A népzene alapjait a Brassai Sámuel Gimnázium ,,Bogancs” néptánccsoportjának zenei kiséreteként sajátították el (ahol utóbb Könczei Csongor a tánckar vezeteset választva kivalt a zenekarból).
