Hello, Friends of the Eletfa Hungarian Folk Band of New York City. We have an exciting April planned (brought to you by Raul Rothblatt), please join us in the festivities. First:
Tuesday, April 6 at the Knitting Factory, 8:00-11:00 p.m. (2 sets) The Knitting Factory is at 74 Leonard St., a couple of blocks south of Canal, and between Church and Broadway. We’re playing at the lowest level of the Factory, called the Old Office ($6 cover for the whole night!) for info, email Raul at deblatt@interport.net. Then, the BIG WEEKEND BASH:1) Friday, April 16 at No Moore with deBand deBlattdeBand deBlatt is the band led by
Raul Rothblatt, also a member of Eletfa and organizer of this very special event, which plays a mixture of African and Hungarian styles. It is the only one of its type in the world as far as we know of, and even gives rise to a new genre of World Music: Afro-Hungarian. It is a must see. Eletfa will be playing
as well during the evening. No Moore is at 234 West roadway, 2 blocks below Canal Totally different sets, featuring deBand deBlatt and Eletfa at 9
and 11 p.m., and possibly at 1 a.m. ($7 for all night). for info, email Raul at deblatt@interport.net2) Saturday, April 17 at the Hungarian House (82nd St., between 2nd and 3rd Avenues), is our monthly Tanchaz, preceded by a Workshop of dances. The evening begins at 7:30. for info, email Kalman/Ocsi
ALSO……. Catch Eletfa in a Concert and Tanchaz in the Washington D.C. area on May 1, hosted by the Tisza Ensemble (http://www.magyar.org/folklor/tisza/) More information to follow on that…A quick addition to your plans. We had scheduled a Tanchaz at the Hungarian House for May 15to end our season. However, Mike Ginsburg, Belle, and the rest of the gang have brought together a wonderful event for that evening that we have elected to be a part of On May 15, we will be one of the many bands playing at a Dance-athon, starting in the afternoon and lasting until late
night, which will benefit the refugees from the war in Yugoslavia/Kosovo. I personally believe it is an important cause, worthy of our attention; supporting the uprooted is a way each of us can lend our aid to those who need it, especially in this
time of war. Besides, gathering as a group to have fun and at the same time raise funds in furtherance of peace is a
gesture we can be proud of. It is during these times that we need to come together and dance and play music from Serbia, Albania, Hungary, Croatia, Bosnia, Macedonia, and all other Central/Eastern European or Balkan nations. It is our special sign of peace. So, this event will be held in upper Manhattan, I believe at the hall of the Holy Trinity Church, but more information will follow shortly. For now, please reserve this date, make a mark that the Tanchaz will be “replaced” by this event, and spread the word of this worthy cause. I will forward you all the information I can
as soon as I know it. Sorry for the intrusion, but I wanted to let you know about this May 15 Dance-athon before it was too late. Happy Easter/Passover, and we’ll see you on either April 6(Knitting Factory), April 16 (No Moore with deBand deBlatt), April 17(Tanchaz), and/or May 1(Concert/Tanchaz in Washington, DC). Of course, add May 15 to those
dates. Viszontlatasra,
Kalman “Ocsi” Magyar, Jr. and the Eletfa Hungarian Folk Band of New York
On behalf of Eletfa (Natalia, Ildiko, Heki, Ocsi, Attila, Raul) – have a nice President’s Day weekend, and see you at the Sidewalk Cafe.
